The Outplay. Outlearn. parent-attended Forest School programme is for families seeking a nature & community focused approach to childhood and learning.

Session Information

Friday mornings from 9:45am–12:45pm.

Ages

We welcome tamariki aged 0–12 years - our Forest School programme is designed primarily with ages 5+ in mind, however children of all ages will benefit.

Younger children are well catered for through sensory play, our mud kitchen, loose parts play, water play, climbing & gross motor skills, nature exploration, and social learning alongside older children. Under 1 year olds attend free with a paying older sibling.

  • Forest School is a globally recognised, long-term, child-led approach to learning held outdoors. It’s built on the understanding that children thrive when they have time, freedom, movement, challenge, and connection with the natural world.

    • children spend long stretches of time outdoors in all weather

    • nature is viewed as an everyday environment rather than a special excursion

    • play is child-led, with active participation from adults when invited by children only, or required for safety

    • adults trusting children to take appropriate risks

    • resilience, confidence, creativity, and wellbeing developing naturally through experience

    • seasons and weather being embraced rather than avoided

Our sessions are about giving children space to become deeply engaged in play, practical skills, discovery, and relationship-building - with nature, with others, and with themselves.

Unlike traditional forest schools that operate from a single site, Outplay. Outlearn. is a mobile forest school. Each week we meet in a different natural space - parks, reserves, bush areas, river edges, and green spaces across community. This allows children to build familiarity with many different kinds of environments, landscapes, ecosystems, and seasonal changes. Children begin to understand that nature is not something separate from everyday life - it exists all around us, everywhere.

  • At Outplay. Outlearn., nothing is compulsory.

Each session includes optional invitations which may include things such as:

    • tool use

    • woodwork

    • outdoor cooking

    • food preparation

    • weaving

    • gardening

    • shelter building

    • nature crafts

    • loose parts construction

    • bushcraft skills

    • seasonal projects

Children are free to engage deeply, briefly, or not at all. Some children spend an entire morning in the mud kitchen. Others build dams, climb trees, observe insects, create imaginary worlds, or work carefully on practical projects. We believe this freedom is where genuine learning happens. Adults are present for support, safety, mentoring, and relationships - but children direct much of their own play and learning.

  • We operate in most weather conditions throughout the year.

Children are remarkably capable outdoors when dressed appropriately, and regular outdoor experiences across the seasons help children develop resilience, adaptability, confidence, and a genuine connection to the natural world.

Rain, wind, mud, frost, puddles, changing leaves, bird calls, cold hands, warm sunshine — these are all part of the experience.

There is no such thing as “perfect” weather for nature play.

    Only different opportunities.

  • Outplay. Outlearn. is a parent/caregiver-attended programme - you stay too.

But this isn’t about hovering over your child or directing their play all morning.

In a rich natural environment, children often settle into deep engagement surprisingly quickly. Parents regularly tell us they find sessions restorative for themselves as well.

    There is space to:

    • slow down

    • observe your child differently

    • connect with like-minded families

    • enjoy being outdoors together

    • step away from the rush of everyday life

Some children need a parent close by to feel secure. Others disappear happily into play for long stretches and return only when hungry.

A parent’s role shifts depending on the needs of the child, but at its heart our philosophy encourages adults to:

    • observe more

    • intervene less

    • trust children’s capabilities

    • support rather than control

    • allow room for challenge, struggle, problem-solving, and growth

At times adults may work alongside children in collaborative experiences such as cooking, gardening, crafting, or practical projects. At other times, your role may simply be to sit quietly with a warm drink while your child becomes immersed in the world around them.

Forest School is something experienced together - muddy boots, birdsong, rain jackets, curiosity, and all.

  • We strongly believe mixed-age environments are incredibly valuable for children.
In modern life, children are often separated by age almost constantly. In nature-based spaces, however, children naturally learn from one another in powerful ways.

    Older children develop:

    • leadership

    • patience

    • empathy

    • responsibility

    • communication skills

    Younger children gain:

    • confidence

    • inspiration

    • language development

    • practical skills through observation

    • opportunities for collaborative play

Mixed-age play also creates a stronger sense of community and belonging. Children learn to navigate real social dynamics, care for one another, and work together.

Part of our role as adults is coaching children in how to interact respectfully with tamariki of all ages - noticing smaller bodies, adapting play when needed, helping rather than overpowering, and becoming caring members of a shared community space.

We do this through modelling, guidance, and relationship-building rather than constant control or intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You’ll arrive to our picnic-style basecamp tucked into nature - a shady nook with rugs and cushions, bubbles drifting past, nature books, and a hot cuppa waiting. We begin at 9:45 with a short welcome so you know what’s ahead and a gentle connection activity to help us all find our rhythm together over the term.

From there, the morning stretches out into proper child-led exploration: mud or water play, climbing trees, digging, and all the gloriously messy, hands-on discovery that the outdoors invites. Alongside that, we offer thoughtfully prepared play invitations - seasonal crafts using natural materials, hands on eco-focused activities, loose parts gathered from the landscape, tools for curious hands, and simple provocations that help children lean into the wildness of the space.

Feel free to eat, breastfeed, or change your child whenever you need to. Just remember to check the hazard register when you arrive and to sign in and out.

We bring everything: all craft resources, natural materials, sensory play, the discovery kitchen gear, and any special additions planned for the day.

Behind the scenes, your session fee covers high-quality materials, insurance, hazard management, and our experienced, first-aid-trained facilitators. You simply arrive, settle in, and enjoy a morning filled with fun and adventure with your family.

  • Our nature playgroup sessions are held in a range of parks, reserves, and natural outdoor spaces across Selwyn and South Christchurch. Most locations are within a 20-minute drive of Rolleston, with regular sessions in areas such as Lincoln, Prebbleton, Tai Tapu, Halswell and Leeston. We rotate locations to give children varied nature play experiences & hands-on local ecological knowledge.

  • We play in all weather – rain, shine, and wind are part of the adventure! Braving the elements builds resilience and often leads to our best sessions, with kids (and adults!) building shelters, splashing in puddles, and getting creative outdoors.

If conditions are unsafe (severe wind, flooding, extreme heat, lightening), we’ll do our best to arrange an alternative venue with suitable shelter (such as a community centre) so the session can still go ahead.

  • Both caregivers and children should come prepared with weather-appropriate clothing. At a minimum you will need to own full rain gear—waterproof jackets and pants, warm top layers (i.e. polarfleece jumpers) — thermal underlayers made of merino or polypropylene (no cotton), hats (cold + sun) and gloves, gumboots, and wool socks. Sturdy, closed toe footwear is essential for everyone, no matter the weather. For non-walkers we recommend waterproof onesies that can cover their feet, or overbooties. In cold or wet weather we can’t permit attendees wearing cotton sweatshirts, cotton t-shirts, cotton trackpants or jeans.

All attendees need to bring snacks, water, and a packed lunch. On cold days we recommend bringing some hot food in a thermos if that is something your child will eat. It’s also important to pack a full change of clothes for messy play or if you get wet. Don’t forget any personal medications or items your child or you may need during the session.

Please note, as organisers we are legally required to ensure all participants have the correct gear. If you arrive without the appropriate clothing or footwear, we may have to ask you to leave the session. Being well prepared helps everyone stay safe, comfortable, and enjoy the day to the fullest.

  • Sometimes kids need to take their gear off, to change or cool down, but most of the time they need to keep it on when the weather calls for it. For everyone’s safety, to keep it fair on other kids, and because we’re legally required to look out for everyones safety - if a child can’t keep the necessary gear on and risks getting too cold/too wet/sunburnt etc, unfortunately they won’t be able to stay at the session. Thanks so much for understanding!

  • Yes - we’re a parent/caregiver-supervised playgroup. Parents and caregivers stay for the whole session and all the same benefits of extended time in nature. We’re all about a friendly, relaxed vibe - think chats, a hot cuppa (byo cup with lid), and maybe even some home baking. Got ideas for making sessions even better for parents? Bring ’em on – we’re all ears.

Attending during school hours

Every school is different, and decisions around attendance during school hours sit between the family and the school. If your child is enrolled at a school and you would like them to attend our Friday morning sessions, we recommend discussing this directly with your child's teacher and principal in the first instance.

Some families may explore options such as:

  • Approved absences

  • Flexible learning arrangements

  • Reduced timetables

  • Individual education plans

  • Alternative learning opportunities

  • Other school-supported arrangements

We encourage families to approach these conversations openly and collaboratively, focusing on how regular participation in nature-based learning may support their child's wellbeing, confidence, engagement, practical skills, social development, and connection with the natural world.

Outplay. Outlearn. can provide information about our programme, philosophy, learning opportunities, risk management processes, and session structure if this would assist your discussions with the school.

Please note that families are responsible for ensuring any necessary approvals or arrangements are in place before attending sessions during school hours. Outplay. Outlearn. is a nature-based learning programme. We are not a registered school and do not provide formal curriculum-based instruction.
